What is Durak?

Durak is a card game that originated in late 18th century Russia and became popular among soldiers during the 1812 Russo-French war. The name means 'fool' and refers to the last player who has cards left in their hand.

The origin and history of Durak

Durak is a game that has been played for centuries in Russia and other Slavic countries. It is believed that it was inspired by other European card games, such as Tarot, Skat, and Whist. It was initially a social pastime of uneducated peasants and industrial workers, but after the October Revolution, it spread to various social levels and became the most popular Soviet card game.

Today, Durak is still widely played in Russia and other post-Soviet states, as well as in other parts of the world. It is considered a game of skill, strategy, and luck, and it can be played with different variants and rules.

The rules and objectives of Durak

Durak is played with a deck of 36 cards, which is a standard 52-card deck from which the numerical cards 2 through 5 have been removed. The cards are ranked from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6.

The game can be played by two to six players, but it is usually played by four players in teams of two. The players sit around a table in a clockwise order. The deck is shuffled and each player is dealt six cards. The bottom card of the remaining deck is turned face up on the table, and its suit determines the trump suit for the current deal. For example, if it is the 7 of diamonds, then diamonds rank higher than all plain-suit cards. The rest of the deck is placed on top of the face-up card at a right angle, forming the prikup or talon. The face-up card remains part of the talon and is drawn as the last card.

The player who has the lowest trump card in their hand is the first attacker. They can play any card from their hand face up on the table as an attacking card. The player to their left is the defender. They must try to beat the attacking card by playing a higher-ranking card of the same suit or a trump card. For example, if the attacker plays a 7, the defender must play a higher spade or a trump card. A trump card can beat any non-trump card. If the defender cannot or does not want to beat the attacking card, they must take it into their hand.

If the defender beats the attacking card successfully, the attacker can play another card of the same rank as any of the cards on the table. For example, if there is a 7 and a J on the table, the attacker can play another 7 or J of any suit. The defender must beat this card as well. The defender can also pass the attack to the next player on their left, if they have a card of the same rank as the attacking card. For example, if the attacker plays a 7 and the defender has a 7, they can pass the attack to the next player by playing their 7 on top of the 7. The next player becomes the new defender and must beat both cards. The defender can only pass the attack if they have not yet played any cards in the current round.

The attack ends when either the defender beats all the attacking cards, or the attacker runs out of cards or cannot play any more cards of the same rank. The attacker then becomes the new defender, and the player to their left becomes the new attacker. The players who took part in the attack or defense discard their cards face down on a separate pile. The players then draw new cards from the talon to replenish their hands, starting with the attacker and going clockwise. The game continues until there are no more cards in the talon or one of the players runs out of cards.

The first player to get rid of all their cards is the winner. The last player with cards in their hand is the durak or 'fool', and they lose the game. If there are two teams, then the team whose member is the durak loses. The durak is usually mocked by the other players and may have to perform some tasks or forfeits.

The variants and strategies of Durak

There are many variants of Durak that can change some aspects of the game, such as the number of cards, the trump suit, the scoring system, or the special effects of certain cards. Some of the most common variants are:

- Podkidnoy Durak (Throw-in Fool): This is the standard version of Durak described above, where the attacker can play multiple cards of the same rank and the defender can pass the attack to the next player. - Perevodnoy Durak (Transfer Fool): This is similar to Podkidnoy Durak, but the defender can only pass the attack if they have a card of the same rank as the first attacking card. For example, if the attacker plays a 7 and then a J, and the defender has a 7, they can only pass the 7 to the next player, not both cards. - Beregovoy Durak (Coastal Fool): This is a variant where there is no trump suit. All suits are equal in rank and only higher cards of the same suit can beat lower cards. - Svintus (Pig): This is a variant where there are two jokers in the deck that act as wild cards. They can be used to beat any card or to pass any attack. However, if both jokers are played in one round, they cancel each other out and both players have to take their cards back. - Durak s Vydoy (Fool with Reveal): This is a variant where each player reveals one card from their hand at the beginning of each round. This card cannot be played or changed until it is the last card in their hand. There are also many strategies and tactics that can help you win at Durak, such as:

- Attack with low cards: It is usually better to attack with low cards, especially low trumps, as they force your opponent to waste their high cards or trumps. You can also save your high cards for defense or for later rounds when there are fewer cards left. - Defend with high cards: It is usually better to defend with high cards, especially high trumps, as they allow you to beat your opponent's attacks easily and prevent them from playing more cards. You can also avoid taking unnecessary cards into your hand. - Pass strategically: It is sometimes better to pass an attack than to defend it, especially if you have a card of the same rank as an attacking card. This way, you can transfer your problem to another player and save your cards for later. However, you should be careful not to pass too often or too early, as you might end up being attacked by multiple players or having too many cards in your hand. - Remember played cards: It is important to keep track of which cards have been played and which ones are still in play. This way, you can estimate your chances of beating or being beaten by certain cards and plan your moves accordingly. How to Download Durak Online?
